Catator has been selected by the prestigious Argonne National Laboratory to design and build a state-of-the-art ammonia catalyst heat exchanger. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing green hydrogen infrastructure and energy solutions.

The new heat exchanger will leverage our proprietary CataLite® technology, which merges combustion, heat transfer, and cracking into a single integrated system. By efficiently coupling endothermic and exothermic reactions, the CataLite® Exchanger is designed to utilize residual energy from ultra-lean fuels to drive reforming reactions or to generate emission-free steam and heat.

Our innovative approach ensures emission-free combustion with an immediate thermal response, accommodating streams with varying fuel content, including ultra-lean off-gas streams without any need for support fuel. The plate-type CataLite® heat exchanger, are set to revolutionize the way we think about energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this exciting journey to create cleaner, more efficient energy systems with Argonne National Laboratory.

Catator attended the consortium meeting in Amsterdam April 2024 as project partner in Clean Bioenergy for Industry (CBE4I), a new EU-funded project aimed at developing an innovative, fuel-flexible biomass updraft gasification-based technology. The project seeks to provide a highly energy-efficient, almost zero-emission, and zero-waste process heat supply, tailored for flexible implementation in industrial settings.

About CBE4I

The CBE4I project focuses on creating a technology that utilizes low-value biomass residues, which are available in large quantities, to provide heat at various temperature levels. This heat can be applied to indirectly heated processes vis product gas combustion in an almost zero-emission gas burner with integrated three-way catalyst flexibly coupled with different boiler types (hot water, thermal oil, steam). Additionally, the technology aims to offer clean product gas via product gas extraction with integrated thermal and catalytic tar reforming for utilization in gas burners for direct heating.

A unique flue gas condensation concept with a directly coupled heat pump will boost efficiency up to 120%, relative to the net calorific value (NCV) of the fuel. CBE4I shall also include a newly developed condensate treatment for direct sewer discharge, a new concept for utilizing biomass ashes in fertilizer production, and the necessary fuel pre-treatment technologies and fuel logistics suitable for industrial sites.

Catator's involvement in CBE4I includes developing tar reforming technology and three-way catalysts based on the patented CataLite technology.

Project partners include BIOS Bioenergiesysteme GmbH, Polytechnik Luft- und Feuerungstechnik GmbH, Daikin Applied Europe SPA, Technische Universitaet Graz, Centro de Investigaciones Energeticas Medioambientales y Tecnologicas, ICL Europe Cooperatief UA, Universiteit Utrecht, and Wuppertal Institut fur Klima, Umwelt, Energie gGmbH.

Each partner brings unique expertise and contributions, making the CBE4I project a truly collaborative and innovative initiative.
